Managing allergies through the year

Allergies are a response by the immune system to substances known as allergens. When a person with allergies comes into contact with an allergen, such as pollen, pet dander, or certain foods, their immune system reacts by releasing chemicals, such as histamine. This immune system response can cause a range of symptoms, including sneezing, itching, watery eyes, runny nose, skin rashes, and in severe cases, difficulty breathing or anaphylaxis.

Allergies can be managed through avoidance of allergens, medication, and in some cases, immunotherapy.

As we enter the high pollen season, some basic ways of reducing exposure to allergens and their effects:

  • Have locally produced raw honey all year round to reduce the reaction to pollen during peak season

  • Limit outdoor exposure during peak pollen times, check local pollen forecasts and try to stay indoors during high pollen count days, especially during the early morning and evening hours when pollen levels are typically high.

  • Use a saline rinse or a neti pot to flush out allergens from your nasal passages helping alleviate nasal congestion.

  • Use allergen proof bedding, and have a shower before bed to remove all pollen from hair etc to get a better night’s sleep.

  • Invest in a dehumidifier to help control indoor humidity and filter out pollen, especially good to use in the bedroom to aid in a better night’s sleep.

Holistic therapies can go a long way to supporting you when dealing with allergies and the associated symptoms.

Hypnotherapy can help alleviate the symptoms of seasonal allergies by reducing stress and anxiety. By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can help reframe the body's response to allergens, reducing the intensity of allergic reactions. It can also help manage symptoms such as itching, sneezing, and congestion by promoting relaxation and strengthening the immune system.

Sound therapy uses specific frequencies and vibrations to promote balance and healing within the body. It can help with seasonal allergies by reducing inflammation, boosting the immune system, and supporting overall well-being. Certain sound frequencies have been found to have anti-inflammatory effects, which can help alleviate symptoms such as sinus congestion and respiratory issues associated with allergies.

Jikiden Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing that aims to restore balance and harmony within the body. It can help with seasonal allergies by reducing stress, boosting the immune system, and promoting overall health. By channelling healing energy, Jikiden Reiki can help alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, itching, and inflammation.

It's important to note that these alternative therapies should be used as complementary approaches alongside conventional medical treatments for seasonal allergies. It's always recommended to consult with a qualified healthcare professional before starting any new therapies.
